Size

Physical Description
A very large, robust, and heavily built toad with a distinctively blunt snout. It possesses large, prominent bony ridges (cranial crests) over the eyes that meet above the snout. The limbs are relatively short and powerful, suited for walking rather than leaping.

Behavior
Primarily nocturnal and terrestrial. They are slow-moving crawlers rather than jumpers. When threatened, they inflate their bodies to appear larger and secrete a potent milky-white toxin from their parotoid glands. They are bold and often congregate around artificial lights to hunt insects.
Diet & Feeding
Extreme generalist and opportunistic sit-and-wait predator. They eat almost anything they can swallow: insects, spiders, carrion, small rodents, reptiles, other frogs, and even bird eggs or pet food left outdoors.
Reproduction
Explosive breeders triggered by heavy rains. Males produce a loud, low-pitched trill. Amplexus is axillary. Females lay massive quantities of eggs (up to 30,000 per clutch) in long, gelatinous black strings in water. Males have 'Bidder's organs' which can develop into ovaries if the testes are removed.
Vocalizations
The advertisement call is a rapid, low-pitched, rhythmic trill that sounds somewhat like a distant small motor or a pneumatic drill (ranging from 10 to 18 pulses per second).
Life Cycle
Eggs hatch into small, black, schooling tadpoles within 48–72 hours. The tadpole stage is relatively short, lasting 3–11 weeks depending on temperature. Metamorphosis results in tiny toadlets (about 1 cm) that grow rapidly. Lifespan is 5–15 years in the wild, longer in captivity.

Toxicity & Defense

Ecological Role

Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) - smaller with more prominent knobs on the cranial crests. Gulf Coast Toad (Incilius nebulifer) - has a light line down the back and smaller parotoid glands.
Observation Tips
Look around porch lights or street lamps in tropical or subtropical areas on humid nights. They are easy to spot sitting on flat ground, lawns, or roadsides. Listen for the low, mechanical trilling sound near ponds after rain.
Handling & Safety
NOT recommended to handle. The toxin can cause severe irritation to human eyes and mucous membranes. If handled, use gloves and wash hands thoroughly. It is lethal to pets; if a dog bites one, flush its mouth immediately and seek a vet.
Seasonal Activity
Active year-round in tropical climates. In temperate introduced ranges like Florida or Australia, they may become dormant (brumation) in burrows during cold spells, emerging only when temperatures rise and humidity increases.
Cultural Significance
Famous as a 'poster child' for the dangers of invasive species. It is the subject of the famous documentary 'Cane Toads: An Unnatural History.' In some cultures, its skin was used for leather or its toxins used in traditional medicine, though this is extremely dangerous.
Interesting Facts
Originally introduced to Australia in 1935 to eat beetles attacking sugar cane crops; it failed to eat the beetles but decimated native lizard and snake populations instead. It is the only amphibian with a documented case of 'cannibalistic' tadpoles that seek out and eat the eggs of their own species.
