Description

The Gray Treefrog is a master of disguise, often looking more like a patch of lichen than a living animal. In its juvenile stage, like the one pictured, it is a tiny, delicate jewel of the forest floor, eventually maturing into a stout climber that serenades the summer nights with rhythmic trills.

Physical Description

A relatively robust, medium-sized frog with a short, blunt snout. It features large, bulbous eyes with horizontal pupils and prominent, circular adhesive toe pads at the tips of its fingers and toes. The tympanum (eardrum) is distinct but smaller than the eye.

Skin Texture & Coloration

The skin is distinctly granular or warty (tuberculate). Dorsal coloration is highly variable, ranging from lichen-grey to bright green or brown, often with dark, irregular blotches that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. A hallmark feature is a bright yellow or orange wash on the inner surfaces of the thighs, visible only when the frog jumps.

Distinguishing Features

Habitat

Arboreal; primarily found in deciduous forests, woodlots, and swampy areas. During the breeding season, they migrate to permanent or ephemeral ponds, vernal pools, and water-filled ditches. They are often found near human dwellings on porch lights or windows hunting insects.

Geographic Range

Common throughout the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, ranging from Manitoba to Maine, and south to northern Florida and Texas.

Behavior

Primarily nocturnal. They are excellent climbers, spending most of their time high in the forest canopy. When threatened, they tuck their bright thighs under their body to blend in with bark, relying on crypsis. If flushed, the 'flash colors' on the thighs may startle a predator.

Diet & Feeding

Insectivorous. Adults consume a wide variety of moths, beetles, ants, flies, and spiders. They are sit-and-wait predators, often congregating near light sources at night to catch attracted insects.

Reproduction

Breeding occurs from late spring to mid-summer, triggered by heavy rains. Males call from vegetation near water. Eggs are laid in small clusters (up to 40) attached to floating vegetation, totaling 1,000–2,000 eggs per female. Amplexus is axillary.

Vocalizations

The Gray Treefrog (D. versicolor) has a slow, melodic bird-like trill. The Cope's Gray Treefrog (D. chrysoscelis) has a faster, harsher, higher-pitched trill. The call is the only reliable way to distinguish the two species in the field.

Life Cycle

Eggs hatch in 3–7 days. Tadpoles are notable for having high, translucent tail fins that often develop a bright red or orange tint in the presence of predators. Metamorphosis occurs in 6–8 weeks. Juveniles are often bright emerald green before turning grey.
